Location: Masonville Dredge - Baltimore, MD
Application: Soil Stabilization for Dredged Soil Reuse
Client: City of Baltimore
Contractor: Allan Myers, Inc.
Product Used: StrataTex HSR 750/100
The Challenge
Determined to advance sustainability and land reclamation, the City of Baltimore launched the Masonville Dredge project, aiming to repurpose locally dredged material as base land for construction. The initiative demanded effective stabilization of the soft, challenging base created by the dredged soils, needing the use of high-performance geosynthetic solutions.
The primary challenge was the poor strength and instability of the dredged material. Conventional stabilization techniques are unable to address the challenges posed by the soil's high moisture content and variable composition. To create a workable and load-bearing platform, the team needed a product that delivered exceptional separation, reinforcement, and filtration to maintain construction integrity.
The Solution
Strata Tex HSR 750/100, a high-strength woven geotextile from Strata, was deployed to reinforce and stabilize the base layers. Its superior tensile strength and filtration properties allowed the dredged soil to be effectively utilized, minimizing the need for imported fill and reducing overhead project costs.
The Result
With the inclusion of StrataTex HSR 750/100, the project team successfully transformed a difficult and unstable base into a reliable construction platform. The use of locally dredged material not only met performance expectations but also supported the city's environmental goals by promoting the reuse of waste material.
