Could Your Rail Footings Fail Over Time? Print E-mail

Across the country walking and riding trail planners are recognizing the serious liability issues related to railing integration on top of retaining walls. These trail planners, along with many others, are turning to Sleeve-It 1224R to make their walking and riding trail projects stable and safe. Sleeve-It is a fence-post anchoring system that integrates stable fence footings into the support structure of retaining walls, while the retaining wall is constructed.

Sleeve-It is used in many parts of the country from Spirit Lakes, IA to Aspen, CO and Boston, MA to Roanoke, VA, where walking and riding trail planners are committed to constructing strong, secure railings and retaining walls.

“Many of our larger projects in the past year have been trail jobs. There is one coming up in Lexington KY with over 700 Sleeve-It’s to be installed” says Jon Calle, Nat’l Product Mgr. “The walls are not necessarily tall but can be very long. In the case of this project almost a mile of wall and fence!”

In addition to maximizing land usage above the wall with Sleeve-It, many design professionals are also reducing the post spacing at times to 4’0” centers. Closer spacing adds an additional factor of safety for bike riders to the existing pedestrian code of 50 plf at 42” above grade. (see IBC section 1013.1, 1013.2, and 1607.7.1). Click here for more information on the Sleeve-It System.
